ARA-290 (cibinetide) is an experimental 11-amino-acid peptide derived from a specific region of erythropoietin (EPO). Unlike EPO, it was designed to activate the innate repair receptor without stimulating red-blood-cell production. Its main research interest is nerve protection, reducing inflammation, and tissue repair.

Benefits studied

  • 🧠 Neuropathy & nerve repair — Human studies have reported improvements in symptoms of small-fiber neuropathy and evidence of increased corneal nerve-fiber density.
  • 🔥 Anti-inflammatory effects — ARA-290 appears to shift inflammatory processes toward tissue-protective and repair pathways.
  • ⚡ Neuropathic pain — Clinical studies in sarcoidosis-associated neuropathy and diabetic neuropathy found improvements in neuropathic symptoms.
  • 🩹 Tissue repair/protection — Its proposed mechanism involves activating pathways involved in cellular protection and regeneration following injury or inflammation.

  • 🩸 Metabolic effects — In one phase 2 diabetes study, 4 mg daily for 28 days was associated with improvements in HbA1c and some lipid measures, although this is preliminary evidence rather than an established treatment.
  • 🏃 Physical function — A small clinical trial in sarcoidosis-associated small-fiber neuropathy reported improved exercise capacity.
