Benefits of tadalafil
For erectile dysfunction:
- Helps improve the ability to get and maintain an erection with sexual stimulation.
- Begins working in about 30 minutes to 2 hours for many people.
- Can remain effective for up to 36 hours, allowing greater flexibility in timing.
For BPH:
- Improves urine flow.
- Reduces frequent or urgent urination, including nighttime urination.
- Helps reduce the feeling of incomplete bladder emptying.
Muscle “pumps” and the gym
Some people use tadalafil because its blood vessel–relaxing effects may increase blood flow to working muscles, which can lead to:
- A fuller or stronger muscle “pump” during resistance training.
- Increased muscle vascularity in some individuals.
- Potentially improved exercise tolerance for some people.
However, tadalafil is not approved or proven as a performance-enhancing drug, and research has not consistently shown improvements in strength, muscle growth, or athletic performance in healthy individuals. Any increase in muscle pump is due to increased blood flow rather than increased muscle-building effects.
Common doses
- 2.5 mg or 5 mg once daily for daily treatment of ED or BPH.
- 10 mg or 20 mg as needed before sexual activity for ED.
Common side effects
Most people tolerate tadalafil well. Possible side effects include:
- Headache
- Flushing
- Indigestion or heartburn
- Nasal congestion
- Back pain
- Muscle aches
- Dizziness
Serious side effects (seek immediate medical attention)
Get urgent medical care if you experience:
- An erection lasting more than 4 hours (priapism).
- Sudden loss of vision or hearing.
- Chest pain during or after sexual activity.
- Severe dizziness or fainting.
Important precautions
Do not take tadalafil if you use:
- Nitroglycerin or other nitrate medications, as the combination can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure.
Use caution if you also take blood pressure medications, including Amlodipine Besilate, because the combination may increase the risk of low blood pressure, dizziness, or lightheadedness. Many people take both safely under medical supervision, but it’s important to monitor how you feel, especially when starting treatment or changing doses.
